We are in that tense period in the two wars which are being waged - the one in Ukraine and the other in the Middle East - when one senses the storm gathering but it has yet to break.

In Ukraine the pressure from the Russians is greater - by orders of magnitude, especially in the sky - than it has ever been, with the ground preparations for the decisive battle, the breaking of the Slaviansk-Kramatorsk line of fortified cities, well underway.

In the Middle East similarly there are growing signs of preparations for what could be the decisive battle in the struggle between the US and Iran, likely to happen after the midterms.

Meanwhile the economic and political situation remains tense, with a growing political crisis in Germany, more problems in the bond markets, and Xi Jinping's visit following by some of the most hostile pieces in the US media about China that I have ever seen.
