AFRICA STORIES: ANTI-RUSSIAN RESOLUTION AT UNITED NATIONS (STATISTICAL BREAKDOWN)
Yesterday, I wrote about the passing of a UN General Assembly resolution asking Russia to withdraw from Ukraine by majority (~73%) of the 193 countries that constitute the United Nations. Among those who voted for the "anti-Russia" resolution were Brazil, Indonesia, Argentina and Saudi Arabia. Every single one of these mentioned countries have good relations with Russia, especially Brazil which is part of the BRICS
Breakdown of the reaction to the UN resolution Among All 54 African countries:
- 30 voted for the resolution (56% of African countries)
- 15 voted to abstain (28% of African countries)
- 7 didn't bother to cast any vote (13% of African countries)
- 2 voted against the resolution (4% of African countries)
As seen above, 56% of African states for the resolution asking Russia to withdraw from Ukraine. This is not a measure of hostility, but one of principle (i.e. respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity).
However, the remaining 47% of African states decided to either vote against the resolution; voted to abstain from the resolution; or did not even bother to attend UN General Assembly where the vote was taking place.
So why did a significant minority of African states refuse to throw Russia under the metaphorical bus? The answer to that question can be found by clicking at the link below:
