15-25 years ago, I studied Mathematics where I met and worked with people from many different countries, not just in maths, but in multiple disciplines. I met some intelligent and hard working people who in no way would tolerate speculation on an academic paper. This environment was my world. If something was assumed, you acknowledged that, and had some kind of idea of the likely-hood that speculations could be true. If it was important enough, you investigated, and reported in a coherent, articulate and thorough way. I have sat on a jury too, and the lawyers exhaustively presented the truth in the same manner.

This was never the approach of the majority, because it is hard work, requires patience and persistence and often does not give a desired result. But it should be the basis for ANY important decision. The judicial and academic systems MUST work this way.
