What is a Jew? I don't even know. It's a very fuzzy concept. It's cultural and has nothing to do with genetics. Take me, for example. My genealogy chart says I am 95% Ashkenazi on my mother's side. My mother was born in Russia (Odessa). That means that I am genetically related to Russians. I am half Slav (the other half is Anglo-Saxon). I was never told I was Jewish. My parents were atheists. My mothers parents were completely assimilated Russians who also did not practice Judaism, they were not religious. I don't know how far back in my ancestry you would have to go to find a practicing Jew. So who or what am I? As a matter of fact, as opposed to what I psychologically "identify" with, I'm an American citizen. My parents were progressive, antiwar FDR Democrats, and I was raised as such. I have not changed all that much since then.

Jeffrey Sachs says he is a Jew, and I have no idea what that means to him. Did his family practice Judaism in his home? I haven't done any research on it. ...
