I listened earlier to Alastair with Chris, it made me think back on a war that is closer to my heart, postcode and sadly intimate knowledge, that of the tragic destruction of Yugoslavia through the Balkan wars and NATOs more obvious illegal acts in the bombing of Serbia. The real purpose of the Bosnian project I still struggle to comprehend for it is as much to do with Cui Bono (who benefits) as it is how evil is manufactured to war through ethnic divisions. Though ultimately, for ordinary folk, it has become less about who won, it is about what was lost; lives, friendships, divided families, scattered communities to the four corners of the world and a nation once loved, a marvel of reconstruction post WWII, a leading light in the non alignment movement, not perfect but a force to be reckoned with. Perhaps the latter is the real reason, for its alignment threatened empires not with might but by cooperation.
