It is now entirely clear that there has been a major diplomatic debacle, with Putin coming away from Anchorage believing he had agreed to a proposal offered him by Trump and Witkoff, which they confirmed to him whilst he was there, only for Trump to go back on what appeared to have been agreed in the weeks that followed.

As is often the way when people do that sort of thing (and I know this from multiple experience) Trump is trying to cover up his weakness (and there are no other words) by resorting to threats, bluster and hostile action, which in the end is going to make any future understanding much more difficult and probably impossible.

Doing that with the Russians is folly but my feeling is that Trump is drifting into doing the same with the Chinese, which is going to be very similar but with results that will be far worse.
