The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) provides coverage for direct physical losses caused by flooding. Here are some of the details of NFIP coverage:
Coverage types
The NFIP offers two types of coverage: Dwelling Form and Commercial Coverage. The Dwelling Form covers building property and personal property, while Commercial Coverage covers commercial buildings and personal property.
Coverage limits
The maximum coverage for a single-family dwelling is $250,000 for building property and $100,000 for personal property. For other residential buildings, the maximum coverage is $500,000 for building property and $100,000 for personal property. For commercial buildings, the maximum coverage is $500,000 for both building property and personal property.
Covered losses
The NFIP covers losses caused by flooding, such as overflow, runoff, mudflow, and erosion. It also covers damage caused by sewer backups that are a direct result of flooding.
Deductibles
You can choose different deductibles for building property and personal property. A higher deductible will lower your premium, but will also reduce your claim payment.
What's not covered
The NFIP doesn't cover damage caused by moisture, mildew, or mold that could have been avoided by the property owner. It also doesn't cover currency, precious metals, valuable papers, property and belongings outside of a building, living expenses, or financial losses caused by business interruption.
