I think Alex is being a a bit too negative about the ICC. Khan has worked hard to get the warrants issued against the Evil Duo and has been successful. Netenyahu and Gallant may never be brought to trial as both will be protected by the Evil Empire, but the two of them have been named and although they won't experience any shame, sociopaths don't, history will record that they are both criminals who evaded justice through cowardice.

Ultimately if multi-polarity thrives and there are significant countervailing forces against Western hegemony, the UN will be reformed and institutions like the ICJ and ICC may well be reformed with them. In a world where wealth, political power and influence is not concentrated in the West the funding for the UN and its institutions will not be dominated by the Empire. The UN's institutions may then be freed of the toxic financial influence of the Western Elites and become institutions of truth and justice not of power and privilege.

If this does happen it will be interesting to see how countries like Russia and China will react if one of their own becomes the subject of ICC warrants. We do know that Russia hasn't been happy with Putin's warrant, but that is against the backdrop of the toxic Western influence so the charges are, in all probability, bogus.

Both China and Russia insist that the UN should be the center of international legal power, not the "rules" of the West's rules based order, yet both their current leaders insist that "what happens in their country" is their business and no one else's. They can't have it both ways.

If they do want it "both ways" then they will probably work hard to neutralise the ICJ and ICC. Whether the ICC and ICJ do get reformed and do have power over ALL countries will be a litmus test of how serious Russia and China are about a UN law based order. I, like John Merscheimer am a geo-political realist so I suspect they won't be very keen on the idea and will try to subvert the reforms to protect themselves. The elites of all countries have no qualms about the monopoly violence of states, locking people up or even executing them, but the elites themselves are never keen on the same measures being applied to them. The GFC, the drug money laundering by HSBC have never resulted in a jail sentence. Contrast this with George Floyd's Death by Police for buying loose cigarettes with a dodgy $20 note. He never made it to court. He died on the pavement.

Sadly for me I'm probably too old to find out, because changes like these are twenty to thirty years away. As a sinner, I won't be up there on Cloud 9 observing it all, I'll most probably be down below, protecting my bottom from the pitchforks of those angry little devils and trying to avoid the flames. I did pray for forgiveness, but all he said was "there are limits."
