PARIS, November 27. /TASS/. The Palestinian movement Hamas is ready to agree to a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip following the declaration of a truce between Israel and Lebanon, a representative of the radical organization told France-Presse.

"Hamas is ready for a ceasefire and a serious agreement on swapping prisoners," he said. "The declaration of a truce in Lebanon is a victory and a major success for resistance forces," the spokesman added.

Earlier, the Israeli war cabinet approved a plan for a ceasefire in Lebanon. Soon after, US President Joe Biden announced that agreements between Israel and the Lebanon-based Shia movement Hezbollah provide for Lebanese forces regaining control over their territory within 60 days. Then the Israeli army will gradually pull out from Lebanese territory, while civilians from both sides will be able to safely return to their towns and begin rebuilding them.

The situation in the Middle East escalated dramatically when, on October 7, 2023, armed Hamas supporters from the Gaza Strip breached Israeli territory, killing residents of border settlements and seizing more than 240 hostages. In retaliation, Israel launched a military operation in the enclave to destroy the military and political structures of Hamas and liberate all the hostages. The hostilities in the Gaza Strip continue to this day.
