Since the war began, UK has dispersed c, £11 billion to Ukraine and committed £28 billion up to 2031 for military purposes.

This includes UK contribution to a prior £50 billion ERA loan but does not include UK commitment to the latest £90 billion loan which Starmer describes as Keir Starmer described participation as “very good for UK-EU relations, UK defence jobs, and support for Ukraine".

Nobody believes that Ukraine could ever pay back these loans.

Trump’s response to the Iranian offer is disturbing and further proof that he is out of his depth. It is also further evidence for my contention that the US is not just ‘agreement incapable’ - as the Russians say - but ‘negotiation incapable’ as well.

Trump - the ‘Great Dealmaker’ - doesn’t seem to understand that diplomacy requires negotiation. Though the US has so far failed to defeat Iran, and though the situation in the global economy is deteriorating every day, Trump becomes incensed the moment the Iranians make a proposal that falls short of his maximalist demands. That the current proposal is a perfectly reasonable opening bid in intended negotiations is a possibility that doesn’t occur to him. Yesterday morning I got a surprise call from a friend who lives in Kiev, Ukraine. He’s lived there for many years and he stayed put during the last four years of war. During that time we spoke from time to time and his reports were usually unremarkable. The war was on, the country was in a crisis, but life went on - nothing too far from the ordinary, at least in Kiev.
A few months ago he sent me a video from his apartment showing the firing of anti-air defense missiles from a relatively nearby location. He himself carries a foreign passport so he wasn’t overly concerned that he or any of his kids could be picked up by the hyperactive press gangs hunting for military service volunteers.
