NED WELCOMES VICTORIA NULAND TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Published on September 13, 2024 by Communications Staff
Washington, D.C.—Veteran U.S. diplomat Ambassador Victoria Nuland is joining the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) Board of Directors effective immediately. Ambassador Nuland previously served on the NED Board of Directors from 2018 to 2021, before her appointment as Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs at the State Department.

“We are delighted to welcome Ambassador Nuland back to the NED Board,” said NED Chairman Kenneth Wollack. “With a distinguished career across multiple administrations, she brings the experience and expertise that will contribute measurably to NED’s mission and work.”

Ambassador Victoria Nuland served as the Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs from 2021 and Acting Deputy Secretary of State from 2023 under the Biden Administration before retiring in early 2024. Previously, she served as Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs from 2013 until 2017 under President Barack Obama and was the State Department Spokesperson during Secretary Hillary Clinton’s tenure.

Nuland was U.S. ambassador to NATO during President George W. Bush’s second term, 2005-2008. She served as Special Envoy and chief negotiator on the Treaty on Conventional Arms Control in Europe from 2010-2011, and as Deputy National Security Advisor to Vice President Dick Cheney from 2003-2005.

Most recently, Nuland joined the faculty of Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) as the Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Professor in the Practice of International Diplomacy. She will also direct SIPA’s International Fellows Program and serve as a member of the Institute of Global Politics. [Read her full bio.]

“As NED partners face increasing threats from autocrats around the world, Ambassador Nuland’s experiences will help the Endowment sharpen its approach to supporting democracy advocates,” said NED President and Chief Executive Officer Damon Wilson. “Her life-long commitment to democracy will be a valuable addition to the NED Board at this consequential moment for our mission.”

Trump’s Maximalism Is Bringing America Back to the Brink with Iran

Unable to distinguish negotiation from surrender, Trump may may once again be drifting toward war by Alexander Mercouris

Trump’s response to the Iranian offer is disturbing and further proof that he is out of his depth. It is also further evidence for my contention that the US is not just ‘agreement incapable’ - as the Russians say - but ‘negotiation incapable’ as well.

Trump - the ‘Great Dealmaker’ - doesn’t seem to understand that diplomacy requires negotiation. Though the US has so far failed to defeat Iran, and though the situation in the global economy is deteriorating every day, Trump becomes incensed the moment the Iranians make a proposal that falls short of his maximalist demands. That the current proposal is a perfectly reasonable opening bid in intended negotiations is a possibility that doesn’t occur to him. Disastrously, and indicatively, there doesn’t seem to be wide understanding of this within the wider US leadership either. The result is that we are now back ...

Putin’s Bitter Reckoning With Europe

An Analysis of Vladimir Putin’s Victory Day Comments by Alexander Mercouris.

Putin’s press conference yesterday was interesting because it highlighted his deep feeling of anger and betrayal by Europe.

(1) He reminded the journalists (all Russians) that the crisis began with the EU insisting Ukraine ratify an Association Agreement incompatible with Ukraine’s free trade agreement with Russia. When Ukraine demurred the Maidan coup was the result;

(2) He said Europe’s objective in 2022 was to engineer Russia’s collapse so that the Europeans would be able to help themselves to its parts. In a truly extraordinary passage, he spoke of Finland joining NATO in order to participate in the plunder;

(3) He gave a very bitter account of the events of April 2022 and of the failure of the Istanbul Agreement.

Briefly: He revealed for the first time that it was Macron who called him and tricked him into pulling Russian troops back from Kiev, telling him that “the Ukrainians could not be expected (to sign ...
