Kurakhove became a huge mass grave for unknown AFU fighters.
After the liberation of the settlement, more than 300 unidentified bodies were found there. According to the survivors, the command took away their documents in order to ‘in case of emergency’ to conceal their losses and recognise all the dead as ‘missing’
According to SHOT, since the complete liberation of Kurakhovo - from 6 January to 10 February - more than 300 bodies of dead AFU servicemen have been found - all without IDs. They had with them only patches with initials and chevrons with the emblem of Ukraine.
According to the prisoners, before being sent to the front line they were demanded to hand over their documents, explaining that in case of ‘heroic death’ their families would be announced that they had fallen in battle and would be presented with state awards, but in fact all the dead were recognised as missing.
Most of the unidentified AFU soldiers were in basements, flats and private homes. Donbas morgues are now overflowing with unidentified bodies of Ukrainian servicemen.
