#Slovenia to call consultative referendum on NATO membership
The announcement comes on the heels of an unexpected parliamentary defeat for the country’s prime minister on defence spending.
Slovenia’s liberal Prime Minister Robert Golob said on Friday that he intends to call a consultative referendum on the country’s NATO membership, following a surprise defeat in parliament over a related measure on defence spending.
"There are only two ways: either we remain in NATO and pay membership, or we leave the alliance – everything else is populist deceit of the citizens of Slovenia," Golob said, according to a government statement.
His referendum is expected to be formally tabled next week.
Golob’s gambit comes as part of a damage control effort in response to a successful initiative by The Left party, a junior partner in his centre-left coalition, pushing for a consultative referendum on increasing defence expenditure.
In an unexpected outcome, Slovenian MPs approved The Left's proposal 46 to 42 on Friday. The referendum question will ask voters "whether they are in favour of Slovenia increasing defence spending to 3% of GDP annually in 2030, or approximately €2.1 billion".
Golob's liberal Freedom
liberal Freedom Movement party voted against the initiative, while his junior coalition partners – the Social Democrats and The Left – sided with the conservative opposition to back it, deepening rifts within the ruling bloc.
Discontent had been brewing since Slovenia signed up to higher NATO defence spending commitments at the NATO summit in The Hague on 24 June, which envisage members raising military expenditure to as much as 5% of GDP by 2035.
Slovenia is among the few countries that failed to meet NATO's previous 2% GDP spending target in 2024, although Ljubljana stated it aimed to hit it by the end of 2025.

Golob said his counter-referendum idea was intended to "dispel any doubt as to the true will of the people.”
Although consultative referenda in Slovenia are not legally binding, the opposition, led by conservative SDS chief Janez Janša, has called on Golob to link a vote of confidence in the government to the outcome of the plebiscite, which Golob has dismissed.
Janša, a close ally of Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and a staunch Trump supporter, is said to have ambitions to return to power in parliamentary elections scheduled for 2026.
🧵: Huge. Due to mass public opposition to increased member defence spending 'agreed' at the NATO conference, Slovenia will now hold a referendum on NATO membership. This could have far-reaching consequences across the alliance.

Referendum only consultative (so results can be ignored), and accompanying campaign will inevitably be subject to intensive Anglo-American meddling. But it puts question of NATO membership on the table at a time many Europeans are questioning whether they want to be part of it.

It is forgotten/unknown that in many cases, enrolling countries in NATO has required intensive skullduggery. This is particularly the case in the former Yugoslavia, due to NATO's central role in its destruction. Slovenians have never been overly enthusiastic about the alliance.

Montenegro joined NATO in 2017 despite overwhelming local opposition, following a CIA/MI6 false flag coup. In 2020, under a third of voters backed membership. Yet the Montenegrin government won't dare even discuss withdrawing, due to US threats.

Macedonia was forced into NATO in 2019 in the most corrupt manner imaginable, following an MI6/Soros/USAID coup, which required changing the country's name to "North Macedonia", opposed by over 80% of the population.

Meanwhile efforts to enroll Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina into NATO continue apace. 80% of Serbs, and 98% (!!!) of Bosnian Serbs, a third of BiH's population, oppose joining. The Slovenian referendum is going to add a lot of fuel to local anti-NATO fire.
Throughout Central and Eastern Europe, there is significant and growing anti-US, anti-NATO and pro-Russia sentiment. Might the populations of these countries begin agitating for referenda on alliance membership now? We shall see!

It has not yet been determined whether it will be consultative or legislative! There is a significant possibility that it will be legislative.
Don't underestimate Slovenians. One of the main reasons we left Yugoslavia was that the army wanted 2% of GDP, now NATO wants 5%.
