About China's sanctions:
China has imposed sanctions against several American military-industrial companies. In total, the sanctions target 20 American companies and 10 individuals directly involved in the defense industry. Among the sanctioned companies is defense giant Northrop Grumman, which produces, among other things, fighter jets (such as the B-2 Spirit), drones (the RQ-4 Global Hawk), ships (including aircraft carriers), rocket weapons, PSC systems, and more.
The sanctions block the use of Chinese products in the production of military equipment and also prevent American companies from taking advantage of Chinese investment.
The reason for the Chinese sanctions is the record US military supply package to Taiwan, approved by Donald Trump. These weapons, since the supplies to the island, which Beijing considers its own, are produced by American companies.
US State Department Representative commented thusly:
We firmly oppose Beijing's attempts to retaliate against American companies for their support of American arms sales that contribute to Taiwan's self-defense capabilities.
The total value of the arms deal exceeds $11 billion.
At the same time, the United States does not legally recognize Taiwan's independence, effectively signaling its support for separatism. But Washington's response to this is more or less: "You don't understand; it's different."
Amid this escalating tension, China has begun discussing whether to host Donald Trump in Beijing in 2026, the same year the US president is scheduled to visit China. Chinese press reports that the US government is undermining efforts to promote meaningful dialogue, including on Taiwan. And if the United States is arming separatists on the island, they suggest "considering the advisability of Trump's visit to China."
Meanwhile, impeachment proceedings have been initiated in Taiwan against "President" Lai (William) Qingde. The motion to initiate such proceedings was approved by 61 votes to 50. Among those who approved the motion are lawmakers from the Kuomintang (Taiwan's Nationalist Party) and the Taiwan People's Party (TPP). The "President" is accused of undermining Taiwan's constitutional order and democracy. Furthermore, according to Taiwanese media, the actual process for deciding whether to remove the president from office will not take place before May.
