SO EUROPE'S FINISHED? REALLY.
Greenland will be a message from America to ordinary Europeans: "F..k you." Ordinary European will get it, but they won't wear it
It is simply not true that Europe has no chip development or electronics industry.
AMSL the manufacturer of chip lithographic equipment is based in the Netherlands, the mirrors used in these machines which are at the core of the technology are designed and manufactured by Zeis a German company. Cymer the company that makes the UV lamps is Californian based, but is owned by ASML.
Philips, Siemens and Varian all European companies are big in medical imaging such as MRI machines and CAT scanners, with globalised manufacturing facilities. Europe has a US$58 billion export market for these and other related machines.
ARM the designer and licensee of processor designs used in phones and embedded systems and which has 99.9% market share is UK based.
ST Microelectronic based in Geneva Switzerland is a major player in embedded electronics technologies and have the largest range of ARM based SOC's in the world. NXP Semiconductors is headquartered in Eindhoven, Netherlands and is another maker of sophisticated embedded chips. I use there stuff in my designs and they are great.
Europe also produces a lot of the software used for embedded electronic development.
Social media companies are not part of the real economy, they are rent seeking parasites; advertising platforms that make nothing, but just leverage the productive economy to extract value from it. However, in terms of the communications infrastructure that supports this parasite, Europe is a key player:
Nokia (Finland): A global leader in optical transport and 5G infrastructure. It recently expanded its optical portfolio by acquiring Infinera.
Ericsson (Sweden): Primarily focused on mobile networks and electronic communication hardware like basebands and radio units.
ADVA Optical Networking (Germany): Specializes in high-capacity optical fiber systems used for cloud and mobile services.
Prysmian Group (Italy) & Nexans (France): Two of the world's largest manufacturers of optical fiber cables and cabling systems.
Europe also has a thriving space industry. I won't go into it here, but there is plenty of data available on it. Just to say, Europe has its own GPS system, Galileo.
It's a pity that Alexander takes such a binary view of Europe vs the US. I think his blinkered view of the EU, where he only sees the negatives not the positives, is a major component of this. Does he think Europe's market should be Balkanised, so the US can pick off all the best bits one by one as the European countries go it alone? Or should it organise itself into a cartel to leverage its intellectual property to fight the menace. It is this Balkanisation that Russia is fighting against in the Ukraine war. The Russians have worked it out, ordinary Europeans will to.
Europe will lose Greenland, but this loss will teach the ordinary people of Europe what the US really is, and they will turn to countries like China and Russia to get away from the hegemonic bully across the Atlantic. Trump and Miller's hubris will destroy NATO and with it, over time the Europeans will get rid of the US bases. New leadership in Europe (Not the UK) will find rapprochement with Russia, a security agreement will be signed, and the toxic Americans will lose Europe including Russia, a market twice the size of the US. Will this happen? The Europeans have no other choice. And as Europe's engagement in high-tech demonstrates in spades, they are not stupid.
The UK is an outlier. They are joined at the hip with their hideous, dysfunctional offspring and will never let go until they turn into a US state like Mississippi or Louisiana with no health care, no money and no hope. Demagogues like Farage won't save them.
This potential great win by Trump and humiliating loss for Europe won't be the end of the matter by far.
