Trump went really hard for more than month about taking Greenland, threatening military action and tariffs if he did not get his way. What we ended up getting in Davos was a framework deal on Greenland negotiated by NATO CEO Mark Rutte.
Denmark was not even part of the deal. Maybe Denmark or Greenland should have been in the room as this framework was agreed.
Early reports claim the framework is modeled after British sovereign control of territory (which act as military bases) on Cyprus. The deal would allow limited development of potential mining of rare earth minerals.
If this is indeed the deal, then it is a big L for all parties. No one living in Greenland will be happy having massive US military bases acting as US sovereign territory on their land... its sucks. Greenlanders give up territory without a vote or referendum.
Denmark, not consultated or part of the deal has just seen a part of Greenland given away by the NATO CEO. Think about that, NATO gave away parts of Greenland/Denmark. What else will NATO give away?
Trump gets more military bases that he could have easily obtained through private, direct negotiations with Denmark. He flip-flopped on tariffs and is now committed to Golden Dome money that will be flushed down the golden toilet. The entire NATO/transatlantic order is made to look like a disorganized charade at best and a cheap mafia racket at worst. US looks chaotic, even to their vassals.
Of course these are the early reports of this deal so things may change. Trump may wake up tomorrow and go back to demanding ownership of Greenland and imposing 1000% tariffs on anyone who stands in his way. A stable, quiet and peaceful situation in Greenland has now turned into a long term headache and open sore for the US, Denmark, Greenland and Europe.
