TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Foreign Ministry of Iran strongly condemned a terrorist attack on a mosque in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, that killed and injured a number of worshippers during Friday prayers.
In a statement on Friday, Spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry Esmaeil Baqaei strongly denounced the terrorist attack at Khadija Tul Kubra mosque in southeastern Islamabad’s Tarlai Kalan area, which occurred during the holding of Friday prayers and resulted in the martyrdom and injury of several worshippers.
Baqaei extended condolences to the families of the martyrs as well as to the government and people of Pakistan, and prayed for the recovery and good health of those wounded in the criminal act.
Emphasizing the principled position of Iran in firmly condemning all forms and manifestations of terrorism and violent extremism, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that preventing and confronting the heinous phenomenon of terrorism requires cooperation and coordination among all countries of the region, along with a sustained fight against the perpetrators, organizers, supporters, and financial backers of such acts.
The suicide attack at the Shiite mosque in Islamabad has killed at least 31 people and wounded dozens more during Friday prayers.
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar condemned the incident as a “cowardly suicide attack on innocent worshippers”.
“Targeting places of worship and civilians is a heinous crime against humanity and a blatant violation of Islamic principles. Pakistan stands united against terrorism in all its forms,” he posted on X.
A security source said that the attacker detonated himself after being stopped at the gate of the mosque.
