Islamabad: Vance's Chance to Save MAGA and the Trump Presidency
Apparent defeats are often temporary — they can be reversed as circumstances change (I think Alexander said that once). One of the changed circumstances is the emergence of JD Vance as the only man in position to stop the bleeding from this self-inflicted wound. With Trump and Netanyahu so utterly shamed and discredited, the world looks to Putin, Xi, and Vance to clean up the mess.
History shows that it is possible to suffer military defeat and still come out stronger—not in the moment of shock, but in the settlement that the crisis finally allows. After the Battle of Cannae (216 BC), Rome did not treat the loss as a reason to sue for peace on Carthaginian terms; it held its coalition together, stepped back from another immediate all-or-nothing fight, and stretched the war until time, logistics, and isolation—not one afternoon’s outcome—decided who could dictate terms in the Mediterranean. After the disaster in the Teutoburg Forest (9 AD), Rome likewise accepted that it could not annex and administer Germania east of the Rhine at acceptable cost, and it shifted to a stabilized frontier—trading maximal expansion for a durable boundary that reduced endless escalation and anchored security for centuries. Most people don't remember that Teutoburg Forest occurred during the reign of Augustus, because his new strategy was successful.
I hope JD walks into the meeting with a plan that will seal the deal. This is what I would propose:
The Islamabad Framework
April 2026 · Discussion Draft
Preamble
This document is a roadmap toward a negotiated settlement, not a treaty text. It reconciles the principal proposals advanced by the parties — including Iran's revised plan and the United States' revised plan — into a single framework, setting out a practical path to end hostilities, preserve freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, keep Iran's nuclear program exclusively peaceful under effective verification, lift nuclear-related sanctions in phases as compliance is confirmed, and anchor the package in the Charter of the United Nations, the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, and the applicable law of the sea. The framework is sequential and reciprocal: its steps should proceed in parallel where feasible and in agreed sequence where necessary, with sufficient transparency at each stage for the peoples of the affected states to assess whether their governments are meeting the commitments made on their behalf. References to religious or moral appeals for peace do not imply institutional endorsement by any outside authority.
