Excellent article. Thanks Lena!
There is no way to have such a dialogue without throwing climate change issue into the mix. This is a discussion about energy. The forced position of where the energy is coming from has 'alternative' forms of energy(such as renewables and so on) to be relied upon - hence, China, Europe, and even Russia(Ref: Oliver Stone's Nuclear Now film) - due to the US's unrelenting position of struggling to keep(or re-obtain) hedgemonic leadership.
The irony is that big-time politician Al Gore throw the climate change issue into the 2-party political fire. Instead of having an actual environmental scientist do the talking, he decided to do so himself with pure politics in mind and a financial return(private airplanes and such). To boot, the last time he ran for political office was 5 years(over 25 years ago) before he decided to launch his Inconvenient Truth climate change campaign. So, fast forwarding to today's future and one wonders What was Al Gore thinking at the time?
It's not that climate change isn't a major issue. It is, but unlike, say, nuclear war, there is a "learning curve" with climate change(I'm borrowing a line from from former Sec. of defense Bob McNamara in the 2003 Errol Morris documentary The Fog of War in which he refers to Nuclear War as having no learning curve.). Furthermore, we have to reason how did humanity get into this position in the first plane. If I had been one of the Wright Brothers who invented the airplane, I too would have been jumping for joy at the astonishing invention I came up with. It's quite an exciting invention. Of course it's too much for the rest of the animal kingdom, but humans lack any real sensory abilties - the rest of the animal kingdom, with any awareness of such an occurance, at least metaphorically putting their hands, claws, or flippers over their eyes and saying: Oh shit, there goes the planet!!!
And of course wars, Al Gore, and markets have to come into play before we decide to put a band-aid over the problem. A band-aid with something potentially far worse than climate change - i.e. nuclear war.
So the UAE has left the alliance! And other alliances will have other members leaving, because the bonds that form alliances change. This does not happen in the field of Chemistry; it happens in the field of hedgemonic homo sapien dominance, because we lack the ability to adapt to the planet like just about all the other animals can and do. Even the chimpanzees are laughing at us!!!
