Der Spiegel found that Germans fear far more not "Russian tanks," but the failure of their own defense and strikes in cyberspace.

According to a survey by the Insa institute, only 17% of respondents partially or fully agree with the statement that the Bundeswehr can adequately protect Germany in case of an attack — 72% think otherwise. In previous surveys, the majority of Germans already expressed skepticism about the army's defense capabilities and unwillingness to personally fight for the country.

At the same time, fear of a direct military strike from Russia has noticeably decreased: 38% of respondents are concerned about such a prospect, while half admit they do not feel serious concern about a direct attack scenario.

The threat of a "silent war" in cyberspace and damage to critical infrastructure systems is perceived as far more serious. About two-thirds of respondents believe that cyberattacks, sabotage, and deliberate disinformation could significantly worsen everyday life in Germany.

❗️In essence, public opinion in Germany is caught between two poles. On one hand, the government promotes the concept of Zeitenwende — a "change of times" since February 2022 and demands billions for rearmament, appealing to the threat of a "big war" in Europe.

On the other hand, a significant part of society does not believe that the current Bundeswehr can really protect the country, even if it continues to pump huge sums into defense, and simultaneously feels far more vulnerable to invisible strikes on digital infrastructure and the economy than to a hypothetical front.
