West Africa just set a date to leave the CFA franc.
At their July summit in Sierra Leone, ECOWAS leaders reaffirmed that the ECO — a single currency for the bloc's 15 nations — will launch in 2027, with Nigeria, Ghana and a handful of others in the first wave. It's the long-promised step out from under the French-backed CFA franc. The catch: as of 2024, only two members met all four convergence criteria, which makes 2027 look less like a deadline than an ambition.

The FX board: the naira firms and Egypt's pound slips back under 51
Good morning from the Africa desk. Today is about sovereignty — over a currency, over a border, and over the basics of a full plate.
The headline is monetary: West Africa has fixed 2027 for the ECO, its single-currency project — a move that would loosen France's grip on the region's money. But the harder truth sits alongside it: Africa has passed Asia as the world's hunger hot spot, with 307 million undernourished.
And a quieter shift in how the continent moves: Chad plans to scrap entry visas for all Africans from 2027, joining a small but growing club opening its borders inward.
Why it matters: A shared currency and open borders are the machinery of an integrated market — the thing that could let Africa trade with itself instead of only shipping raw goods out. It's the same integration dream Latin America keeps reaching for. The hunger figure is the reminder of what's at stake if it stalls again.

Today across the continent
West Africa. ECOWAS reaffirmed a 2027 launch for the ECO, with Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and The Gambia named as potential first-wave adopters — pending compliance.
Kenya. Startup funding cooled to $692 million, down about 40% from the 2022 peak, as investors back fewer, stronger deals.
Morocco. Growth is set to slow to 3% in 2027 as an exceptional farm year normalises — the conservative end of a 4–4.5% consensus.
Egypt. Cancer mortality fell 23.5% in two years, as state screening campaigns start to show real results.
Nigeria. Two Ansaru leaders got life sentences in Abuja on a 32-count terrorism and kidnapping indictment.
The big moves
Africa is now the world's hunger hot spot › Some 307 million people are undernourished — one in five Africans — and more than a billion cannot afford a healthy diet. On current trends, nearly 60% of the world's chronically hungry will live in Africa by 2030.
Why it matters: A single currency and open borders mean little if the continent still imports its calories. Food security is the floor under every integration dream — and right now the funding gap is widening, not closing.
A Saudi-led fleet moves to shield the Bab el-Mandeb oil route › After the Houthis declared a blockade on Saudi-linked vessels, the coalition pledged a visible naval presence at one of the world's most important chokepoints for African and Gulf trade.
