I figured that an empire that overextends it foes, or supposed foes, will themselves be overextended. But that's throughout history, just like with the Soviet Union.

Can this in some way be analogous to 2008 financial crash? Because overambition goes hand-in-hand with overachievement and, in general, with competition. What may have started once upon a time to be healthy has transformed over time to unhealthy. And overachievement must relate to rationing resources to succeed, but after such a long time rationing will cease to work.
