A US Air Force C-17A Globemaster III flew from Riga to Moscow Vnukovo Airport

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow had no information about the aircraft’s arrival and that no meetings with U.S. administration officials were scheduled at the Kremlin this week. The U.S. side has also not disclosed the flight’s purpose, passengers, or cargo. Reuters said it could not determine whether the C-17 was carrying people or freight.

For now, the main explanations remain unconfirmed:

1. Ukraine talks — possible, but no evidence. Reuters notes that the previous direct flight by a U.S.-registered aircraft from Europe to Russia was in January 2026, when Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner traveled to Moscow for talks with Putin. Unlike that visit, however, this flight was not announced and no meeting has been confirmed.
2. Prisoner exchange — possible, but unverified. U.S. military aircraft have been used in previous exchanges with Russia, though those missions involved much smaller Gulfstream/C-37 jets. The presence of a C-17 alone does not indicate an exchange.
3. Diplomatic cargo or logistics — technically plausible, but also unconfirmed. The C-17 is a strategic transport aircraft capable of carrying up to 77.5 tons of cargo, equipment, or personnel. That capability, however, does not reveal what was aboard this flight.
