Cuba is eyeing full membership in BRICS, with Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez saying Havana wants to contribute to the bloc’s growing role.
Cuba is seeking to join the BRICS group as a full member, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla announced Monday.
“We are also ready to contribute, based on our modest experience, to strengthening the increasingly important BRICS group, which we aspire to join as a full member,” Rodríguez said in remarks published on the Cuban Foreign Ministry’s official website.
The Cuban foreign minister said BRICS plays an important role in preventing the spread of unilateral coercive measures.
BRICS, currently chaired by India, held a two-day summit in New Delhi beginning Saturday amid escalating global and regional crises. Leaders and representatives from member states attended the summit, including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, as well as Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
Cuba seeks deeper role in BRICS
BRICS was established in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India and China, with South Africa joining the group in 2011. The bloc began expanding its membership in 2024 to include additional countries.
Cuba is currently among the group’s partner countries, alongside Belarus, Bolivia, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan.
Cuba’s push for full membership comes as BRICS expands its role as a platform for cooperation among countries of the Global South and advocates for a more multipolar international order.
The group has also increasingly focused on strengthening economic cooperation and challenging unilateral measures imposed outside multilateral frameworks.
BRICS rejects unilateral sanctions
BRICS leaders rejected unilateral sanctions that violate international law and the UN Charter, calling for greater multilateral cooperation and diplomatic efforts to resolve global wars.
In a joint declaration issued at their summit, the leaders called for greater respect for diverse views and positions on key global issues, while reaffirming their commitment to resolving international wars and crises through dialogue and diplomatic consultation.
The bloc opposed the forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, called for maintaining the ceasefire and ensuring unhindered humanitarian access, and rejected measures seeking to alter the legal and historical status of occupied al-Quds.
The leaders also condemned violations of Lebanon’s sovereignty and called for the withdrawal of “Israel” from occupied Lebanese territory. They reaffirmed support for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and expressed concern over attacks on nuclear facilities operating under IAEA safeguards.
The declaration emphasized strengthening global trade, supply chains and energy security amid growing geopolitical and economic instability, as BRICS seeks to expand coordination among Global South countries and promote a more multipolar international order.
