Alex Krainer:
There’s considerable evidence that mass protests are usually organized by deep state security services and are deliberately infiltrated by violent elements.
Some evidence of this emerged over the weekend in France: the rioters emerged uniformed in black hoods and face masks, while someone arranged for neatly and professionally packed pallets of glass bottles to appear at the sites of riots (video footage at link). That would be an impressive logistics and organizational feat if it were arranged by the street thugs.
We can only guess what the agenda could be today. My own suspicion is that it’s aimed at creating a pretext for a more authoritarian crackdown on civil liberties, tighter censorship and possibly even curfews, but time will tell. In these situations, those who organize civil unrest calculate that the population will demand a return to law and order and that people will voluntarily give up their civil liberties and welcome a crackdown on dissent and return to order and stability.
It could all backfire…
This calculus might not work if the general population shares the protesters’ disdain of the authorities, which is largely the case in France today. Already in 2023, the very institutions of state called to quell the riots came close to turning against the government. At the time, the Police Unions of France wrote to President Macron, threatening to revolt: “Today the police are in combat as we are at war. Tomorrow we will be in the resistance and the government should be aware of this.”
In the military circles, many people were similarly inclined: General Pierre Villiers, who is well respected among the French military brass said that the army should be loyal to the people, not to Emmanuel Macron. It’s almost certain that the police, the gendarmerie, and much of the military are even more disposeded to disobey the government and turn against it. That could lead to a civil war in France, whose consequences are entirely unpredictable from today’s perspective.
The collective mindset is clearly moving in the direction of a general revolt and a more determined demand for accountability and justice.
