Determining the ultimate source of a cyber attack is extremely difficult, and in some cases impossible, so it’s suspicious that Britain’s HMCS, Israel, Ukraine, or US Treasury-linked hackers are never mentioned on the list of potential culprits, even though it is 100% certain that they all can and do engage in cyber attacks.
Recall, in May this year, while speaking at the 2026 Reagan National Economic Forum in California, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent boasted about the “Operation Economic Fury,” which involved going after the financial assets of the Iranian government and the IRGC:
“We have seized about a billion dollars of their crypto. … Just outright grabbed the wallets. Some of them may be typing in right now and might not realize that their wallet has been grabbed.”
Another indication that Western actors may be involved in hacking and looting operations was the wave of kindappings. The authorities blamed youth gangs for this kidnappings, but it is more likely that the culprits were close to the security/intelligence agencies and the deep state. The initiative, information access, ability to trace crypto account holders and their family members, kidnap 77 of them, and demand ransom in bitcoin could be just a bit above the “youth gangs’” pay grade.
If US Treasury was able to grab IRGC’s bitcoin wallets, why should we assume that they wouldn’t do it to anybody else? Because they’re nice? Maybe so, but would they still be nice if they designated you as a Hamas supporter, an anti-Semite, a homophobe, transphobe, antivaxxer, communist, anti-15 minute city-er, a free speech absolutist or something naughty like that?
