Trump says Modi promised to stop buying oil from Russia

"Now, I got to get China to do the same thing," US leader added

WASHINGTON, October 16. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has told him he is ready to stop buying Russian oil.

"He assured me today that they will not be buying oil from Russia. That's a big stop. Now, I got to get China to do the same thing," Trump told a press conference at the White House. He also said that Russian President Vladimir Putin would settle the conflict in Ukraine. "I think that Putin, President Putin wants to get it done. We'll see."

The big geopolitical reality is that the Russians continue to advance steadily in Ukraine even as - despite all the talk about sending Tomahawks - the West's military aid to Ukraine is actually shrinking. This is not because of any lack of will to support Ukraine. It is because the capability to do so effectively is simply not there. Seen in that way the rhetoric about the Tomahawks is a sign of desperation not of threat or confidence.

The other potentially big geopolitical reality is the return of the US-China trade war. This is more than a conflict over trade. It is an escalating struggle for economic and technological dominance in which the US - but not until recently China - has been following a nihilistic zero-sum logic. It is difficult to overstate the bitterness and anger each side is now showing to the other.
