Trump has realized that his threat of secondary sanctions against India and China was a mistake and he has asked Putin for this meeting to get out of it. Putin is willing to oblige. But as far as the Ukraine military conflict is concerned, there is no sign that Russia has given up its military objectives. Mearsheimer does not think Russia wants to conquer all of Ukraine, because Russians are too hated by ethnic Ukrainians, and in the end there will be a rump Western Ukraine filled with Nazis and Western-financed saboteurs. I disagree with Mearsheimer on this. I don't think Russia can allow such a rump Ukraine to exist. They will have to occupy, demilitarize and de-Nazify it, not because they want the territory, but because the job has to be finished. Also, what are these "ethnic Ukrainians" who have an implacable hatred for Russians that Mearsheimer is talking about? How ...
