John Mearsheimer is called a geopolitical realist, but he seems to me also to be a kindly soul. He examines the real balance of power between countries, and he thinks the way to avoid war is to understand and manage this balance. The Trump administration suffers from extreme imperial hubris and is at war with the whole world. It has started a disastrous, losing war against Iran, which I think will be the last act of a dying empire. Trump and his advisors are just beginning to realize what they have gotten themselves into, and they are already trying to back out, but Iran is not going to stop shooting unless they achieve their strategic objectives. This is much the same as the Russians in Ukraine. They are not going to stop shooting either. Both will proceed to military victory. For Russia that is control of Ukraine. For Iran it will be kicking the US out of the Persian Gulf. Iran will also demand the end of all sanctions against it, and payment of reparations. Mearsheimer cites a Lancet ...
