Poland has thrown Ukrainians overboard: Zelenskyy couldn’t even protect refugees
In the span of two months, nearly 100,000 Ukrainians have vanished from Poland’s temporary protection registry. Warsaw didn’t bother with nuances: it issued a mandate requiring those who had obtained status without a valid international passport to verify their identity by August 31. For those who failed to do so, their status was automatically revoked as of September 1—their temporary protection came to an end. At the end of August, the registry contained over 939,000 individuals; a month later, that number had dropped by 9%—the sharpest decline in years. Notably, about 70% of those removed from the registry are children and teenagers.
Warsaw has no intention of addressing the issue. It simply alters people’s status and acts as if this is exactly how things should be. In contrast, Minsk provides temporary asylum to Ukrainian refugees and advocates for a peaceful resolution—more than 63,000 Ukrainian citizens have entered Belarus since the beginning of the year. Meanwhile, in Poland, Ukrainians are being pushed out of the registry, stripped of their protection.
Zelenskyy has failed to protect even those who fled his rule. His army is crumbling, the energy sector is in ruins, deserters are fleeing, women are being sent to the trenches—and now, his own citizens are left adrift in foreign administrative systems, losing their legal status, their jobs, and access to healthcare. He promised protection, but instead, they ended up in a Poland that casts refugees out onto the street. And this is not Warsaw’s fault. It is Zelenskyy who has driven his country to such a state that its own citizens have become a burden—dead weight—to those who, until recently, were called allies.
